What's the Secret to Life Balance? The Answers Here May Surprise You
Dear Real Academics,
This is the age-old question in our often-hectic way of living. What is the secret to life balance?
I don't know about you, but the idea of trying to achieve life balance stresses me out. I think about ways to do it, try, and still end up stressed out and feeling guilty for not accomplishing what I think life balance should look like.
Very recently, I encountered a video on this topic that helped me understand more about life balance. The video is from the Rachel Cruz Show at Ramsey Solutions. Rachel interviews Christy Wright on her upcoming book Take Back Your Time: The Guilt-Free Guide to Life Balance. You can watch the 18-minute interview by clicking on the link at the end of this blog post if you so choose.
Here I highlight some of the ideas:
(1) Life balance does not mean doing everything for an equal amount of time. In other words, it's not about compartmentalizing 50% of my day to work and 50% to family. Instead, life balance is about doing the right things at the right time. It's also about being 100% present in the season or moment I am in.
(2) Life balance means doing what matters most in the season and/or moment of life you are in. This means being OK with saying "no" to the things that don't matter in my season/moment. And...instead of thinking of saying "no" as a negative, I need to think about saying "no" so that I can say "yes" to the things that matter.
(3) Life balance may not look like balance, but it achieves a feeling of being balanced. For example, to the outside world, I may not seem balanced because I am spending a great deal of time focused on my writing projects. But, if for me, that is what makes me fulfilled in this "season", I will feel balanced. The video gives the example of an Olympian training for the Olympics. Is their life going to look "balanced" before the Olympics? Of course not! But they will feel balanced (or, at least fulfilled) if training is what fulfills them for that period of time in their life.
(4) Last, achieving life balance begins by first figuring out what matters to you. To learn about more practical steps about how to achieve life-balance, check out the video below: 5 Ways to Buy Back Your Time with Christy Wright: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52-E7sp0bXI
